Writing by jamieg on Wednesday, 11 of August , 2010 at 11:28 pm

This year at Showest 2010, Barco released a 2 new range of Projectors.  The first series based on the 0.98 TI chip and the second on the 1.2 TI chip.  The 1.2 will be upgradable to the 4k TI chip early net year with the 0.98 to follow at a later date.

Barco has an impressive assortment of projectors giving them a very good fit to any theatre.

Some highlights of the new projectors include

  1. amazing fault tolerant rectifier solution.
  2. in depth trouble shooting system built into the projector with diagrams and instructions displayed based on diagnostics coming out of the the projector.

NOTE: This video is LATE as it could not be released until DCN was a qualified Barco Dealer. DCN (www.dcnaustralia.com.au) is sponsored this video.

KDM De-constructed

Writing by jamieg on Monday, 19 of July , 2010 at 12:02 pm

Today I cover the KDM or Key Delivery Message, used to UNLOCK a DCP so it can be played in the cinema.  I cover how it works and how secure it is.

I recommend distributors view this Video as so they have a better understanding of the technology they are now using and how secure it is.  It has never been better for them in terms of security.

As a cinema goer, I recommend you also check this out as it shows you how serious content protection is for the Movie industry.  The technology to catch those who try to film of screen is amazingly sophisticated.

DCP De-constructed

Writing by jamieg on Wednesday, 14 of July , 2010 at 1:45 pm

Today we have a close look at what makes up a DCP or “Digital Cinema Package”.  I will describe the files found on the CRU Hard drives used to distribute the digital files to your cinema.

This includes describing how a DCP is self verifying.  Can contain multiple CPL’s or Composition Playlists, (Ie a playlist of video and audio essences that make up the Film)

The PKL or Package List, a file that tells us what makes up a CPL and all the checking data to make sure every byte is present and accounted for.

Finally I talk about how we have full DCP’s and partial DCP’s and explain how that all works.

In Theatre Projection

Writing by jamieg on Thursday, 17 of June , 2010 at 12:50 pm

Digital projectors can be small and self contained.  This gives us the ability to install projectors in ways never before possible with traditional Film projectors.  In this video we have a look at an install at Cinema Nova, Carlton (Melbourne Australia) in which DCN Australia www.dcnaustralia.com.au add 4 additional digital screens making it a total of 15.

We have a look at how one is mounted and the advantages if in theater projection.
This type of install would be of particular interest to those converting a location not build for purpose, to a Cinema complex.

Showest 2010 – 08 – Dorami CaptiView closed caption system

Writing by jamieg on Thursday, 22 of April , 2010 at 12:50 am

Doremi Cinema introduces the new CaptiView Closed Caption Viewing System for hearing impaired movie audiences.
The CaptiView system transmits and receives AES-128 encrypted closed captions on a wireless band frequency. With an 80 meter signal range, CaptiView can be used from ANY seat in the house.
The CaptiView system consists of a small, OLED display on a bendable support arm that fits into the theater seat cup holder. The easy-to-read screen is equipped with a rechargable Lithium Ion battery that lasts over 24 hours of continuous use per charge. The high contrast display comes with a privacy visor so it can be positioned directly in front the movie patron with minimal impact or distraction to neighboring patrons.
CaptiView is economically priced to allow the cinema owner to outfit 100% of the multiplex. It runs on the existing Doremi Cinema digital cinema server, so no additional hardware is required. It supports SMPTE and Cinecanvas packages, and can support up to four languages simultaneously.

Showest 2010 – 04 – Light Levels on 3D screens

Writing by jamieg on Saturday, 17 of April , 2010 at 1:37 am

Archiving Appropriate Light Levels on the Screen for 3D by Andrew Robinson of Harkness Screen

This is a very interesting talk mainly because it is the first time i have seen an independent industry person put on paper the actual light levels of each of the 3D system.

With all the marketing hype, this is a good place to start with deciding on what system best suites you.
