DCI media players currently use the “MPEG Interop DCP” as the method of playing digital content.  This standard has been expanded by the well known standards body of SMPTE.
In this video I discuss the differences and what a cinema operator should know about moving to the SMPTE DCP.

    MPEG Interop DCP

Did you really mean MPEG, not JPEG2000? The DCP packages we get from distributors are all JPEG2000…

The original DCP’s where MPEG based. JPEG2000 was so new, it was not available at the time. We have migrated to JPEG2000 and MPEG is no longer in DCP..

    Hi
I am sorry if my question may sound a bit strange but it is important for me.
I wounder what is the Interop DCP and its relationship with
    SMPTE DCP?

    Thanks in advance

Interop DCP was the initial implementation done by the DCI committee, from my understanding.
The SMPTE body then got a hold of it. SMPTE is a body that over sees the implementation of world wide technical standards.
As a result, they introduced a large number of changes to the DCP, such as more then only 24fps. Different ways to describe audio tracks. Extended captioning support etc.
The SMPTE is a much better conceived standard with a much broader umbrella. It is defiantly a much better implementation.
We need to move to it, and like any legacy standard that does work in its limited design, to motivate movement forward, we need to keep pushing this issue.

    URGENT REPLY NEEDED PLEASE.

I have a film project where a DCP 24 frames will be used and I must synch that film with the same film but on a video tape (like Digibeta NTSC). Can DCP be synchronised at all? I mean, is there a time code signal which allows synchronisation between machines?

I’d be grateful if you could answer me asap as I urgently need this info.

    Thank you!

    Regards,

      Hi,
Sync of a DCP player to time code is not really what they are designed for. That is more of a post process.

I have seen the opton in the Qube to output time code on an audio channel, but thats about as much as I know.
Doremi are the most common units in the world, and you could hit there manuals. But I cannot remember seeing this when I have been through their manuals.

Otherwise you could encode a time code into the DCP itself (Ie if you are making the DCP in question) and use one of the audio channels as a sync.
