Understanding the Human Vision System

Date: Saturday, April 5
9:15 am – 10:30 am

Education Program:

Technology Summit on Cinema

Description:

For many decades, cinema technology was constricted by physical elements. These included frame size dictated by the 35mm acetate film dimensions, color gamut defined by emulsion and dye couplers, frame rates driven by sprocket gears and brightness by the limitations of xenon arc lamps. Digital technology has freed us from the shackles of these physical constraints, so that many more options are technically possible.

But which “knobs” shall we turn to improve the image? There has been much discussion about increased spatial resolution to 4K or even 8K. Last year TSC discussed the impact of increased frame rate for 3D. Many now argue that image dynamic range or color gamut will be even more impactful. This session will review some the late-breaking findings on human preferences for image brightness in the large screen cinema format and how those preferences translate to the “smaller” screen displays in the home.
