One of the more interesting but technical developments I found at NAB 2014 was the ACES (Academy Color Encoding System ) workflow.

This is a SMPTE based standard on bringing all different recording and display technologies to a common middle ground color science workflow. This is an important step as it will hopefully allow for better and more cost effective hi-quality workflows. Resulting in better quality pictures in lower budget films. An important issue for the cinema industry and something to look out for.
